A taste of fall

The Covington News hosted its first-ever Autumn Fest Saturday, Sept. 20 right in the office parking lot just off the downtown Square. Dozens came to browse about 30 vendors and craftmakers and do some early holiday shopping. Products ranged from gourmet coffee to homemade preserves to handcrafted crocheted items and children's books. Live entertainment was provided by local Ashley Walden. Darrell Everidge, The News photographer, was available to take portraits. Here's a few scenes.

Relay for Life kicks off in Oxford

Starting the season: The 2011 Relay for Life season kicked off in Oxford Saturday morning with dozens of people showing up for a variety of money-raising activities. Events included a walk/run event, musical performances, a motorcycle rally and ride, and other events for children.

Proceeds from all Relay for Life events go to the American Cancer Society. According to the AMC website, the next Relay team meeting will be held at Eastside High School on Monday starting at 6:30 p.m.

State unemployment rate dips

ATLANTA - The Georgia Department of Labor says the state's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate declined slightly last month.

State Labor Commissioner Mark Butler said Thursday that the rate fell to 10.2 percent in February, down one-tenth of a percentage point from a revised 10.3 percent in January. Georgia's jobless rate was also 10.3 percent in February 2010.

Senate signs off on Sunday liquor sales

ATLANTA - In a battle of morality versus modernism, the state Senate signed off on a bill that would allow local governments to ask voters whether to allow the sale of alcohol at grocery and liquor stores on Sundays.
