Rep. Johnson announces grants

A variance for a proposed 150-foot cell phone tower at 10816 Old Atlanta Highway has been heard but not yet approved by Newton County officials. A public hearing on the variance is scheduled before the Board of Zoning Appeals at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 25. A story in Friday's Covington News contained incorrect information.

A taste of fall

The Covington News hosted its first-ever Autumn Fest Saturday, Sept. 20 right in the office parking lot just off the downtown Square. Dozens came to browse about 30 vendors and craftmakers and do some early holiday shopping. Products ranged from gourmet coffee to homemade preserves to handcrafted crocheted items and children's books. Live entertainment was provided by local Ashley Walden. Darrell Everidge, The News photographer, was available to take portraits. Here's a few scenes.

Airport operation work session to take place Tuesday

Dixie Jet Owner Bob Riddell, who operates the Covington Municipal Airport, asked the city council to consider a new operating agreement, because he said the broad early termination clause makes him wary of investing in the airport's future.

"We kind of have a cloud over our head… to be able to pull our lease without cause," Riddell said.

NHS teacher tends to sea turtles over summer break

Not all teachers take a break during their summer break. Jim Stansell, environmental science and zoology teacher at Newton High School, recently completed two, four-day workshops on sea turtles and coastal ecology on Georgia's Sapelo Island. The Sapelo Island National Estuarine Research Reserve offered the trainings as part of its teacher training series.

The tree shaper

Maintaining a hobby can provide the peace of mind one needs in the current economic climate. Some take up reading, some take on sports and others do a little gardening. Lee Edwards decided to take up bonsai cultivation as a hobby 16 years ago while visiting the bonsai collection at the Monastery of the Holy Spirit in Conyers. Since then, he has grown over 50 trees that reside beautifully in his backyard.

Salem Camp Meeting 2010

Campers from near and far braved the summer heat and joined fellow worshipers in a weeklong celebration of God's glory for the 182nd Salem Camp Meeting at the Salem Camp Ground in Covington from July 9 - 16.

The week's activities included music performances by local artists and choirs, classes for all ages, shirt tie-dying, swimming and slip and slide fun. Campers were awarded with ribbons for attendance and nick-nacks for memorizing scripture.
