Insurance tax helps county budget

Newton County commissioners will not have to cut their budget for the first time in four years, in part thanks to receiving $1.28 million more in insurance premium tax money, a little discussed revenue source.

In order to receive insurance coverage, people must pay a premium to their insurance company. Those premium payments are then taxed by the state, with revenues split between the state and local governments.

Boy tells escape tale to students

Hundreds of students filled the Oxford Chapel Thursday to listen to a single boy speak. But this was no ordinary boy. His name is Santos and he had escaped only a few years ago from the child armies of Ugandan guerilla leader Joseph Kony.

Santos came to Oxford with the organization Invisible Children to speak out about the evils of Kony and what local students can do to stop his reign in Africa.

Accreditation Assessment Team invites public comment on local law enforcement

A team of assessors from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies will arrive April 29 to examine all aspects of the Covington Police Department's policies and procedures, management, operations and support services, Police Chief Stacey Cotton said recently.

Verification by the team that the CPD meets the commission's state-of-the-art standards is part of a voluntary process to gain accreditation - a highly prized recognition of law enforcement professional excellence, he said.

The history of Earth Day

Each year on April 22 the world celebrates Earth Day to recognize what many consider the birth of the modern environmental movement back in 1970.

The goal of Earth Day 2012 is to "Mobilize the Earth." The original idea for Earth Day came from founder Gaylord Nelson who was a U.S. senator from Wisconsin. After witnessing the horrendous damage left behind by the massive 1969oil spill in Santa Barbara, Calif., Nelson decided that it was time to stand up for Mother Earth.

Arrests for attempt to steal alcohol

One man and one teen were arrested early Thursday morning, after an observant delivery driver alerted authorities to two suspicious men hanging out around the back of Walmart.

When officers met with the driver, he explained that there had been approximately 25 burglaries in the Atlanta area in the last month, and when he saw the two men hanging out behind the store where no one should be, he called 911. Walmart management was also notified when the two entered the store around 2:57 a.m.
