Sheriff’s Office to host pill drop

The Newton County Sheriff's Office will be holding their fourth annual pill drop April 28. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the NCSO will work with the National Drug Enforcement Administration to "Take Back" unused prescription pills, no questions asked.

The event will be held inside Walmart - both on Industrial Blvd. and on Salem Road. NCSO officials will be on hand to collect the potentially dangerous expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs for destruction. The service is free and anonymous for all Newton County (and surrounding area) residents with no questions asked.

What started off as a quiet, intimidated room full of students attending the Military Panel at Oxford College on Wednesday, turned into a engaging and moving experience between both the soldiers and audience.

Local resident opens for Merle Haggard

Twenty-five-year-old Mansfield native Gannon Adams has been in love with country music his whole life.

He first became interested in performing while he attended Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in Tifton, Ga. He started a self-titled band six months ago and has been traveling solo with Merle Haggard for the past few weeks as Haggard's opening act. He will open for Haggard again next Wednesday, April 25 at Macon City Auditorium.

First responders simulate disaster

The multi-vehicle accident left many blood-covered victims scattered along Hwy 278 outside of Newton County Tuesday. Some were nursing shattered bones and cuts while others stumbled around, confused and moaning for help. The skilled first responders who arrived on scene only had an allotted amount time to take care of the injured and the shipment of radioactive waste that was involved in the wreck.

Passport fee debate reaches Newton

Newton County residents have had their passports processed by the Newton County Superior Court clerk for many years, but a longstanding state law that allows the clerk of courts to take the $25 passport processing fee as personal income is being scrutinized and reconsidered across the state.
