Continuance requested in child exploitation case

An attorney for Andrew Patrick Harper, charged with 15 counts of sexual exploitation of children, has asked for a continuance in the case, which was on the trial calendar for Newton County Superior Court Judge Horace Johnson during the week of Oct. 8.

The charges against Harper, 22, stem from his April, 2011 arrest.

Woman sets woods on fire

A local woman charged with setting the woods on fire near City Pond and Alcovy Road was ordered to undergo a mental health evaluation.

Alecia Charlette Jackson, 28, was charged at the beginning of the year with arson of lands in the third degree, a felony.

2012 Newton County Mutt Show

Dozens of puppies and dogs came out Saturday morning to strut their stuff for the Humane Society's annual Newton County Mutt Show fundraiser.

The show, hosted on the Covington square, began at 10 a.m. and featured five different categories: Face Only a Mother Can Love, Most Beautiful, Most Handsome, Best Dressed, and Best Trick. First, second, and third place ribbons were awarded in each category.

Lane closures begin Oct. 9

Georgia DOT maintenance crews have scheduled to continue tractor mowing on Ga. Highway 212 and Ga. Highway 36 and have scheduled to continue roadway ditch maintenance requiring a single lane closure on Ga. Highway 12, Ga. Highway 142 and Ga. Highway 162 in Newton County. This work is tentatively scheduled daily between 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., weather permitting.

Flagmen may be used for this work. Motorists are asked to use caution, reduce their speed and be alert to changing traffic conditions.
