Georgia gas prices fall 6.4 cents since previous week

Average retail gasoline prices in Atlanta have fallen 6.4 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.61/gal yesterday. This compares with the national average that has fallen 2.9 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.77/gal, according to gasoline price website AtlantaGasPrices.com.

Officers use Taser on suspect after chase

Covington officers responded to an in-progress vehicle break in. Upon arriving, the first responding officer witnessed Dagger Grier looking out the back window of a 1999 black Ford Super Duty truck and slump down into the passenger seat.

When the officer approached the vehicle and gave a command for Grier to show his hands, he jumped out of the truck's passenger window and ran towards the woods.

Family returns from vacation to ransacked home

Upon arriving home from vacation, the Jacobs family found their master bedroom ransacked. Further investigation to the rest of the house, the family noticed other items missing as well.

Two windows on the front side of the house were open and another front window had a small hole in it.

Lassiter: NMC hosts annual Spring Gala

The Gala Committee, consisting of members of the Newton Medical Center Auxiliary along with support from members of the Covington Garden Club, planned a spectacular Annual Spring Gala Saturday, April 28.

The home of Drs. Caralyn and Leon Leonard was the perfect setting for this Asian-flair theme affair. The guests were greeted by the hosts along with some of the Gala Committee members. Professional photos were offered before entering the Leonard's estate and allowing guests to view the personal effects of the owners.

Georgia Piedmont graduates Law Enforcement Academy recruits

Georgia Piedmont Technical College's Law Enforcement Academy held its 10th commencement ceremony Friday, April 27 at the college's Covington campus. Five recruits have completed the 17 week law officer training academy. While the class size was low, the caliber of students was high. "This is the smallest graduating class we've had since we began operating. Chimney Park was transformed yesterday into an enchanted fairy forest, full of visitors young and old.

While on patrol, a Covington officer observed a vehicle weaving in and out of the lane and crossing into the left lane. The vehicle also accelerated faster than the posted speed limit.

Father calls police on bullying brothers

A Covington police officer responded to a call of a juvenile problem. The officer spoke with Joseph Hawkins Jr. who stated that when his 8-year-old son and other young children get off the school bus at the apartment, two older juvenile brothers bully the younger children.

Hawkins said that on Monday when the brothers started harassing his son, the boy started running to his house. While running, one of the brothers tripped the son causing him to fall on the asphalt.

Woman gives her social security number to scammer on phone

A Covington police officer responded to a call of fraud. Pauline Sullivan stated that a female had called claiming to be with an insurance company.

The woman said that because Sullivan was diabetic, a free diabetic test meter would be sent to her. To receive the meter, Sullivan needed to provide the number on her Medicare card.
