Eastside sinks Pirates

The Eastside boys and girls basketball teams have gotten off to slow starts this season. After both teams made waves last year, they were depleted by the departure of key senior players who moved on to college. The Eagles (3-6, 2-3 Region 4-AAAA) and the Lady Eagles (2-7, 2-3 Region 4-AAAA) both got wins over Pike County on Friday night to move them in the right direction at the quarter mark of the season.

The Eagles' comeback season

Eastside's offense has been prolific all season, but when it was shutout in the first half against Thomson, things looked dreary for the Eagles. The system was working fine. Eagles' receivers were dropping balls, quarterback Austin Holloway missed on a few throws and Eastside kept turning the ball over.

Miller, Bears clip Eagles for Region Title

Perennial state power Griffin rolled into Homer Sharp Stadium Friday night. And though Eastside gave them all they could handle, in the end it was too much Malik Miller and too much Bears defense as they defeated the Eagles 48-28 on the first really chilly night of the football season.

Freeman building tough mentality

Eastside's boys basketball team was probably the best team in the county last year. The Eagles had a 15-game winning streak at one point and finished the season with a 23-4 record before falling flat in the region championship and the first round of state.

The Lady Eagles of Eastside had led for most of the game, but Chestatee took its first lead with six minutes left in the fourth quarter of the region championship. Eagles look to pressure McDonald

Eastside quarterback Austin Holloway dropped back and delivered a pass to avoid taking what would've been a sack in practice on Wednesday. The Eagles' defense quickly took down the receiver, something they've struggled with as of late, and head coach Rick Hurst praised his defense, but he also coached up players to what they needed to do right.

3 and out

Midway through the season, Eastside football sits at a comfortable 2-2. One fumble in overtime might have propelled them to 3-1, but that's something we'll never know. What we do know is, the Eagles have five games left, all against region opponents with a combined record of 12-7.

Lady Eagles toppled by Walnut Grove

Thursday's matchup against Walnut Grove (19-2, 10-0 Region 4-AAAA) had huge implications for Eastside (15-4-1, 7-3 Region 4-AAAA). A win would have put them in sole possession of third place in the region behind Walnut Grove and Eagle's Landing. Walnut Grove, however, is one of the best teams in the state and it showed on Thursday in its 8-0 victory over Eastside.

Eagles fall to Cardinals

Eastside (2-2, Region 4-AAAA) came into the game against Jonesboro (1-3, Region 4-AAAA) after suffering a humiliating loss to No. 3 ranked Griffin. However, that wasn't all that was ailing the Eagles. Sophomore starting running back Eric Stokes and backup Andrew Henderson were both sidelined with injuries, however Eastside played well and had a chance to win before losing in overtime, 27-21.

Pink out turns to blowout

Other than a stellar fifth inning that saw Newton score all five of its runs, Eastside - rocking the pink unis on Monday - owned the game and the rivalry this season making them 2-0 to finish the series against its rival, as the Lady Eagles ran away with a 13-5 victory.

Eastside to face No. 3 ranked Griffin

This isn't David vs. Goliath. Eastside (2-0 Region 4-AAAA) is too good of a team to be David, but Griffin (2-0 Region 4-AAAA), ranked No. 3 in the state by maxpreps.com, is definitely goliath-level football. A better comparison would probably be Rocky Balboa vs. Apollo Creed - the first time - with Eastside being Rocky and Griffin, the undisputed champion, being Apollo.

Eastside's Hurst on win: Don't quit

Eastside's theme for the football season is 'don't quit.' That theme couldn't have rung more truly than in Friday night's game on the road against Madison County. The Eagles came away with a thrilling victory in overtime, winning 28-21 in the extra period after trailing by seven with less than four minutes to go. In this exclusive Q&A, Eagles head coach Rick Hurst recaps the Eagles eventful win against Madison and the 97-yard drive that made it happen.
