During the summer months, most teens have regular part-time jobs in fast food or retail but for some young entrepreneurs from Newton College and Career Academy, they will work from home this year in addition to their regular jobs.
Several student companies are part of the Entrepreneurial Business Incubator program at NCCA. The Newton College and Career Academy(NCCA) Entrepreneurial Business Incubator (EBI) is an educational learning laboratory designed to provide students interested in entrepreneurship and small business with a nurturing, supportive environment. In November 2014, six EBI Companies competed in a school sponsored Shark Tank competition where they pitched their ideas and the top three ideas were awarded money to invest in their business.
The Entrepreneurial Business Incubator (EBI) provides student business owners the unique opportunity to explore business ideas, start and run a small business with assistance of trained staff and local business partners. Newton College and Career Academy helps students get started with forming a business plan and marketing. Each business has created their own company phone account, website, e-mail address, and in some cases social media accounts. Students acquire customers through these outlets and set-up appointments or jobs during the summer. Some of the companies include a baking/cupcake business, dog grooming services, custom artwork, web design, selling antiques, and handmade duck-calls. Each company is responsible for their own billing and maintaining customer contacts.
Some of the EBI students graduated this spring and will continue on their own, but the program is looking for new entrepreneurs who will attend the Academy during the 2015-2016 school year as well as adult business leaders who are willing to devote a few hours a month as mentors. Three companies were recognized as NCCA EBI Partners of the Year for 2015, Jared Rutberg, B. Hudson, CPA, and Right at Home Healthcare.
