Polls closed at 7 p.m. and walk-in ballots were expected at the Newton County Board of Elections (BOE) office after 8 p.m.
According to BOE Chair Hugh Steele, around 2,000 mail-in votes were received in Newton County.
"We had a tremendous turnout," Steele said. "I've never seen this many mail-ins."
