Covington police release identity of officer shot Monday

COVINGTON, Ga. - The Covington Police Department has identified the officer shot Monday afternoon as Officer Matt Cooper, a six-year veteran of the department.

Cooper, a military veteran, was shot in the line of duty after responding to a call for service at the Walmart on Industrial Boulevard. Cooper is 34 years old. 

Cooper was life-flighted to WellStar Atlanta Medical Center and is receiving treatment. He is in serious condition, according to a CPD news release. 

"We ask you to keep Matt and his family in your prayers during this traumatic time.  We also ask that you keep all of our officers that were involved in this incident and our department in your prayers," CPD released.
