COVINGTON, Ga. – An elderly man has been arrested in connection with the murder of his own son.
A press release shared by the Covington Police Department (CPD) Saturday morning announced that Wayne Eaton, 85, had been arrested for allegedly murdering his son Troy Eaton.
The incident occurred on July 12 at 8150 Lakeview Drive, better known as Lakeview Lakes. The property is known to host carp fishing tournaments on weekends.
According to the incident report, numerous witnesses advised officers upon arrival at 6:54 p.m. that Troy had been shot in the back room of the convenience store that is located on the property. Officers then found Troy “lying face down” with gunshot wounds on his head and lower back.
A witness listed in the CPD incident report stated that Troy had been shot approximately three times in the head and once in the ear. When officers checked to find a pulse, they could not locate one. Troy was 60 years old.
After the shooting numerous witnesses told officers that Wayne was the shooter and that he had walked down to the basement area in which he resided.
Just under 30 minutes after officers responded to the scene, Wayne was spotted looking outside of a window in the basement and was ordered to submit to the officers. Wayne left the basement area a minute later where he was detained.
Officers also retrieved a gun from the basement that was believed to be the murder weapon.
When officers tried to gather a motive behind the shooting, Wayne declined an interview, stating “he wanted an attorney present.”
Wayne was transported to the Newton County jail where he is being charged with one count of malice murder and possession of a firearm or knife during the commission of a crime.
The investigation is still ongoing and anyone with information is asked to contact detective Treadwell at 770-385-2196.
