Students in Robyn Vaughn’s 5th-grade class at Piedmont Academy recently had an exciting hands-on learning experience, thanks to their elementary music teacher, Ms. Mary Dell Fish. Combining music with science, Fish crafted a unique water xylophone to help students explore the concept of different pitches in sound.
Using varying amounts of water in each container, Fish demonstrated how the levels of water affected the pitch, allowing students to visually and audibly experience sound waves and vibrations. This creative approach made the lesson both fun and educational, engaging the students in a memorable way.
Fish’s water xylophone project not only reinforced music theory but also tied in elements of physics, giving students a well-rounded, interactive learning experience. The innovative lesson was a hit among the students, sparking curiosity and a deeper understanding of how sound works.
