Music Educators, Arts Association play host to event for piano, strings students

About 60 young artists, who are taking piano and strings lessons, showed off their skills during a recent event at the Porter Performing Arts Center.

COVINGTON, Ga. — Newton County Music Educators, in conjunction with the Newton Arts Association, played host to the first Newton Young Artists Event on Saturday, Nov. 9.

Several local teachers worked together with the Arts Association in planning and preparation for this event. 

More than 60 piano and strings students participated in the event held at Porter Performing Arts Center. Each student performed two pieces for a judge and received comments, critiques, and a rating. Eleven winners were chosen overall. Each winner received $30 cash prize and an Award of Excellence. 

High School Piano:

  • Winner: Caitlyn Scoggins
  • Honorable Mention: Levi Rumble

High School Strings:

  • Winner: Julia Gaines 

Seventh and Eighth Grade Piano:

  • Winners: Maggie Schoolcraft and Isabella Fletcher 
  • Honorable Mention: Paulo Fulgenzi, Ashton Grossman, Ian Irkhin, Layna Cher, Karian Christmas and Anniston Bowen

Fifth and Sixth Grade Piano: 

  • Winners: Amelia Rose Harms, Laine McNutt and Natalie Scoggins
  • Honorable Mention: Pailyn Morrell, Jaxon Lynn and Natalee Rumble 

Fourth Grade Piano:

  • Winners: Alisa Irkhin and Mitchell Sheppard
  • Honorable Mention: Isaac Fletcher, Maggie Lingerfelt and Ollie Castleberry 


Kindergarten through Third Grade Piano:

  • Winner: Jace Leger
  • Honorable Mention: Ryanne Bone 


Kindergarten through Fifth Grade Strings:

  • Winner: Levi Chambers
  • Honorable Mention: Sarah Kate Baco
