Legacy of Life for Mother Mary Ann Calhoun
*Mother Mary Ann Scofield Rooks Calhoun, who was affectionately known as "Nanny" was born to the late Mr. & Mrs. Will (Fannie Brewer) Scofield in Covington, Georgia on October 9, 1928. On Friday morning March 18, 2016.  Nanny received her "wings" to go home to be with the Lord. Her siblings: Mrs. Ollie Mae Roseberry, Ms. Inez Scofield, Mr. Willie Tom Scofield and Mr. James Lewis Scofield preceded her in death. Three sons: Mr. Pearl H. King, Mr. Harold E. Rooks and Mr. Willie L. Rooks; a grandchild: Ms. Mary Elizabeth King and a great grandchild: Little Miss Kenwanna Williams preceded her in death.

*She attended school at the Pleasant View Baptist Church on Fincher Road. At an early age, she joined this church and continued to serve faithfully on the Mothers Board and the Culinary Ministry until her health failed. She lived most of her life in the Starrsville and Covington area where she met and married Mr. Willie "Bill" Rooks. To this union, five children were born. She later met and married Mr. J.T. Calhoun of Jackson, Georgia both of whom preceded her in death.

*Nanny worked for many years for the FFA-FHA Camp, Bert Adams Boy Scout Reservation, Bibb & Osprey Mills, Newton County Schools System, Various private duty assignments and Newton General Hospital from where she retired in 2003. Nanny loved to work and did not complain about going to work and always did what she could to help others. She was a good mother, neighbor and friend.

*Mother Mary Ann Calhoun leaves to cherish her memories: a son, Mr. & Mrs. Joe (Marie) Rooks, Enterprise, Alabama; and two daughters, Ms. Martha Rooks Alexander, Oxford, Georgia, Ms. Linda Jennings, Covington,Georgia; grandchildren: Ms. Melinda Rooks and son, Mr. & Mrs. Joe (Sonya) Rooks and children, Ms. Annette Rooks and children, Ms. Demetria Jennings and children, Ms. DeMia Grier, Ms. Whitney King and children, Ms. Erica Daniel and children, Ms. Tammy King, Mr. Dexter King, Mr. Kedric Lane, Ms. Janie King and Mr. Harold Rooks, III and a host of other relatives and friends too numerous to name.

Obituary: Sam M. Hay
Sam M Hay

Sam M. Hay, known fondly to friends and family as Sam, departed this world on March 7, 2025, at the age of 82. A lifelong resident of Covington, Georgia, he was born on September 1, 1942, to the late S.M. and Lois Thornley Hay and sadly outlived his cherished son, Jeff Hay. Sam leaves behind a legacy of love and wisdom, embodied by his devoted wife, Roxanne Hay; his children, Scott Hay (Shawn), Gina Hay Bryan (Mark), Cindy Taylor (Tommy), Kristie Farrow (C.J.), and his daughter-in-law Melissa Hay; and his adored grandchildren, Sammy, Larson, Nicole, Camille, Halle, Trevor, Braeley, and Journey, along with numerous other family members and a host of close friends.

A proud 1960 graduate of Newton County High School, Sam furthered his education at West Georgia College before embarking on a remarkable career. His professional journey led him to become a respected publisher, an innovative engineer, a successful entrepreneur, and a pioneering figure in the solar energy industry. Sam’s spirited involvement with his professional associations reflected his dedication and intellect.

Sam’s life was grounded in his love for his family, his unwavering faith in God, and his tireless contributions to his community. Those who knew him would undoubtedly describe him as intelligent, wise, and loving—a testament to his dynamic character.

With his passing, Sam leaves behind a void that will be deeply felt by all, yet his exemplary life will continue to inspire and guide us. His was a life truly well-lived.

Funeral services for Mr. Hay will be held at 2 o’clock Tuesday, March 11, 2025 at the Chapel of J.C. Harwell and Son Funeral Home with Pastor David Payne officiating. Interment will follow at Covington City Cemetery.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 12:00 PM until 2:00 PM prior to the service on Tuesday.
