Having a blast

It was a fantastic Fourth of July here in Newton County.

The city of Covington put on a great show on the square on Sunday, with entertainment and beautiful fireworks, and the city of Porterdale waited out a downpour on Monday to put on a fun fireworks display of its own.
Oxford had its down-home community parade on Monday before storm clouds gathered.

You can see photos from the Fourth events at Covnews.com.
These family-friendly events proved that you don't have to travel far to have fun, and you don't have to spend very much, either.

Thanks to the organizers for the flawless staging of some fine patriotic celebrations. Your efforts were much appreciated and applauded.

If you missed out on Sunday and Monday, you have another chance to catch a fireworks show. Social Circle had a bit of bad luck as a thunderstorm basically hung overhead for much of the afternoon on Monday, so they'll set off their fireworks Saturday night.

Y'all come.

Our Thoughts: Remembering Nancy VanKleeck

The Covington News would like to take a moment to remember Mrs. Nancy VanKleeck. We became acquainted with her a few years back while she was asking for information about the jail log. She had a ministry in which she would write letters to inmates telling them about Jesus. She was able to write over 11,000 letters. She was a true woman of character. We will miss her.
