The Alcovy High School football team suffered its second straight loss in a 52-0 defeat at the hands of the Evans Knights at home.
“They beat us in every phase of the game: offense, defense, special teams and coaching,” said Alcovy coach Chris Edgar after the game. “They out-coached us tonight, for sure. We had a great week at practice, but that didn’t translate to this game tonight.”
The Tigers’ defense failed to get a handle on the game as the Knights went up early in the first half. After a 5-yard touchdown midway through the first quarter, the Knights scored again quickly at the start of the second when quarterback Levin Lackey threw a pass to Breshawn Willis, who ran it 77 yards on a third-and-30 for another touchdown and a 14-0 lead.
The Tigers (4-3, 0-2 Region 3-AAAAAA) had multiple chances to answer, but too many penalties and not enough first downs hurt Alcovy’s ability to get in the red zone. The Knights (4-2, 1-0) scored two more touchdowns in the quarter and went into halftime up 31-0 after a field goal.
“It did get away from us, and I felt the fight that we had at the beginning of the season, we didn’t have tonight, and that’s disappointing,” Edgar said. “That’s something we’ve got to self-reflect and improve on if we’re going to turn this thing around. And there’s still time.”
Evans failed to score during the first possession of the third, giving Alcovy a chance to redeem itself, but the Tigers went three-and-out. Evans then scored immediately after returning a punt 33 yards into the end zone to go up 38-0 with 7:36 left to play in the quarter. The Knights then tried a squib kick on their punt and regained the ball, scoring again just 31 seconds later.
Down 45-0 at the start of the fourth, Quindrelin Hammonds ran the ball 52 yards into Evans territory, but the Tigers couldn’t convert the effort into points. The Knights scored once more with 4:40 left to play to put the nail in the coffin and walk away with a 52-0 win.
The Tigers have been without many key players in its last few games, and Friday night was no different. Though Andrae Robinson was able to suit up, his twin Adrian Robinson did not and neither did Andre Thomas, who are also two big components of the Alcovy offense. Hammonds and Cameron Anderson took turns at the quarterback during the game, but neither could come away with points on the board.
The Tigers are now 0-2 in Region 3-AAAAAA and have failed to score points in either of its region matchups. The Tigers will return home on Oct. 15 to seek redemption against the 1-5 Lakeside Panthers, whose one win came against Greenbriar.
“I told them over there that at the beginning of the season, we had a really big high, and right now we’re at a really big low, and there’s only one thing to do. It’s either fight to get out of that low, or we’re going to stay there.”
