Newton County cross country teams hit the trail at the Carrollton Invite

CARROLLTON, Ga. — On Saturday morning, Alcovy, Eastside and Newton made the trip down I-20 East to compete at the Carrollton Invite at Carrollton High School.

By meet's end, Eastside held the top team placement among the three schools as the Eagles placed 16th in the boys 5,000-meter run. Newton placed 30th as a team in the girls' 5,000-meter run and the Tigers placed 33rd as a team in the boys' championship 5,000-meter run.


Alcovy Tigers


Saturday was the second event of the year for the Tigers and new head coach Wymon Kelley Jr.

The event also marked the return of Kelley to Carrollton, the school he previously coached before joining Alcovy.

In the boys’ championship 5,000-meter run, it was sophomore Kortize Foust that led the way for the Tigers.

Foust finished in 181st place (19:52.08) while Jayden Nesbitt followed in 200th place (20:46.20).

Derwin Broadnax, Carlos Green and Adrian Rowe also placed in the event.

For the girls’ team, Janelle Martin and Makynlee Allerton finished in 202nd and 205th place, respectively.


Eastside Eagles


For the Eagles, freshman Chase Henderson posted the team’s top time.

Henderson placed 43rd in the boys’ 5,000-meter run (18:08.79) as the freshman once again had the best time for Eastside.

Henry Meller and Malachi Scharff placed in 65th and 76th place, respectively.

Kaiden Blazina, Kaleb Blazina and Zion Sistruk rounded out the Eastside placements for the boys’ side.

Maren Poynter led the girls’ team for the Eagles in 89th place (23:37.24).

Kayce Stamper and Madeline O’Brien finished in 174th and 176th place, respectively.


Newton Rams


For the Rams, it was Mariah Edwards that led the way.

In the girls’ 5,000-meter run, Edwards took home 112th place (24:06.26).

Nia Barrett and Alaysha Holsey followed in 127th and 169th place, respectively.

Nina Ware, Erin Sellers and Sade Jefferson also competed for Newton in the girls’ event.

For the boys’ team, Marshal Haynes (19:13.78) and Christopher Carter (21:02.91) placed in 118th and 220th, respectively.
