Pa Softball

The Piedmont Academy Lady Cougars split key matchups with John Milledge Academy and Tattnall Square Academy this week.

In Piedmont Academy’s second matchup with both teams this season, the first result stood tall as the Lady Cougars defeated John Milledge and lost to Tattnall Square for the next time this season.

Hinson and Stowe power Piedmont Academy past Lady Trojans

By the end of the matchup with the Lady Trojans of John Milledge Academy Tuesday, Sept. 24, the Lady Cougars won 17-5.

The Lady Trojans found themselves outmatched in the contest as Piedmont Academy out-hit John Milledge 15-4 in the game.

Five of the Lady Cougars’ 15 hits on the day came from Teagan Hinson and Lilly Stowe, who also combined for nine runs batted in (RBI).

After grabbing a 1-0 lead in the first inning after a solo home run from Marissa Holder, Piedmont Academy posted four runs in the second inning on hits from Mackenzie Plunkett, Kolbee Osborne, Kamie Gibby and Shaniyah Lane.

Two innings later, the Lady Cougars went a step further and put up a six-run fourth inning.

A three run home run from Hinson and a two-run triple from Stowe highlighted the scoring barrage.

The scoring continued into the ensuing inning as the Lady Cougars added on five more runs on a trio of RBI base hits along with a sacrifice fly.

By the end of the fifth inning, the Lady Cougars held a 17-5 lead.

This allowed Plunkett to pitch the final inning one-two-three to close out the game via run rule.

Plunkett pitched the entire game for Piedmont Academy and head coach Joe Johnson. Through five innings, Plunkett allowed two earned runs on four hits and struck out seven Lady Trojans.

At the plate, it was Hinson’s and Stowe’s day.

The duo went a combined five-for-eight with five hits and nine RBIs on Tuesday.

The Lady Cougars were active on the basepaths, too, as the team tallied nine stolen bases on the day.

Tattnall Square gets ahead early and holds off the Lady Cougars

Piedmont Academy fell short in its second matchup of the season against the Lady Trojans of Tattnall Square 17-8.

Ultimately, Tattnall Sqaure’s 11 points by the end of the second inning paved the way in the Lady Trojans win.

After the Lady Cougars went scoreless in the opening frame, Tattnall Square posted three runs in the bottom of the first inning on a single from Brianna Logue that was followed by a two-run home run from Callie Still.

In the ensuing inning, Piedmont Academy answered.

With the bases loaded, one swing off the bat of Lane tied the game at 3-3 with a three-run triple.

RBI knocks from Kylee Keck and Holder moved the Lady Cougars ahead 5-3.

However, an eight-run second inning cut off any Piedmont Academy momentum.

Tattnall Square sent 12 batters to the plate en route to its eight runs. The inning was highlighted by a two-run home run from Annamary Talcott.

By the end of the second inning, the Lady Trojans led Piedmont Academy 11-5.

The long ball continued to be a theme in Wednesday’s contest.

In the top of the third frame, Gibby put a three-run home run over the left field wall to trim the Lady Trojans’ lead down to 11-8.

Tattnall Square answered in the bottom half of the inning with two runs from a RBI groundout and a sacrifice fly.

In the fifth and final inning of the game, the Lady Trojans added on four more runs to end the game via run rule.

After an error scored one run, Talcott hit her second home run of the game — a three run home run — to end the game with a 17-8 Tattnall Square victory.

Piedmont Academy totaled eight hits in Wednesday’s game. Lane and Gibby led the scoring with three RBIs apiece.

Following the split with John Milldge and Tattnall Square, Piedmont Academy moved to 12-3 on the season with a 4-2 record in GIAA Class AAA-AAAA District 6 play.

The Lady Cougars will be back on their home diamond Tuesday, Oct. 1 against the First Presbyterian Day Vikings.
